There is no arguing that American politics is a mess. I think a lot of the blame lays on bringing politics into the church, and church into the voting booth. Religion and politics should not mix.
Bad things happen when you mix religion and politics.
Our founding fathers knew it. That’s why our founding fathers included this clause in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof….
But somewhere along the line, we have chosen to ignore that separation, and we have slowly legislated religious beliefs. Christian beliefs.
Keep Your Religion Out of Politics
Public Prayer Doesn’t Belong in Government
I find it ironic that one of the most personal ways to practice the Christian religion is a hot issue because Christians want everyone to pray to their God in public.
Public prayer should not be part of any government-led event.
There should not be public prayers at city council meetings, commissioner court meetings or school board meetings. There shouldn’t be public prayers in the state legislature or the United States Senate or Congress.
There also should not be public prayers before football games, graduations, or any other school-sponsored activity.
Nope. You are wrong. Government-sponsored events should not include public prayer.
God Didn’t Command You to Pray in Public
God never told you that you need to pray in public or that everyone else needs to join you in public prayer.
In fact, it is easy to argue that the exact opposite is true.
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ~ Mathew 6:5-8
The Schools Never Said You Can’t Pray
Schools have never prevented a child from praying.
Your child can pray during the spelling test. They can pray while doing their multiplication. They can pray during dodgeball.
Children can pray anytime they want in school.
As long as those prayers are silent.
Which is fine, since God likes silent prayers.
Christianity is Not The Official Religion of the United States
And WOW! Who are you to presume that the prayers should be Christian?
Why not a Jewish prayer? Or a Muslim prayer?
Christianity is not the official religion of the United States.
In fact, our founding fathers purposely made sure that our country didn’t have an official religion.
So, stop expecting everyone else to pray like you.
There Is No War on Christmas
There is a war on Christmas because my kid’s school calls it a holiday party and the department stores have holiday sales
It is time to get over yourself on this one.
There is no war on Christmas.
Nobody is threatening to shoot your child if they say the word “Christmas” at school.
And seriously people.
You are talking about the school party where the kids are going to make gingerbread houses, decorate cookies shaped like a Christmas tree, and sing Jingle Bells.
Not a single one of those, or 99% of the other things you do to celebrate Christmas, has anything to do with the birth of Christ.
Not to mention that December 25th isn’t even Jesus’s birthday. Christians co-opted that date to compete with the pagan holiday Saturnalia.
God Didn’t Command You to Force Your Morals on Other People
Who are you to claim that your religious beliefs are superior and everyone should follow them?
Who are you to claim moral superiority and the right to dictate how other people should live their life?
Who made YOU God?
Stop trying to legislate your morals.
And yes, I am talking about abortion laws.
Abortion is between a woman and her God.
Your personal salvation is not at stake if a random woman in Omaha decides to have an abortion.
Stop acting like it is by trying to legislate your moral agenda.
Keep Your Politics Out of Religion
You should keep your politics out of your church like you should keep religion out of the political arena.
Politics Don’t Belong at the Pulpit
Shame on religious leaders who use the power of the pulpit to advance a personal agenda and political beliefs.
I’m no Biblical scholar, but I am sure that there is no Biblical evidence that Jesus belonged to an American political party.
The President of the United States is Not Your Spiritual Leader
THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES IS NOT YOUR SPIRITUAL LEADER
That goes for Trump, Obama, Bush Jr., Clinton, Bush Sr., Reagan, Carter (Okay. I might make an exception for Carter), Ford, Nixon, or any of the presidents that came before them.
Stop anointing your political candidates merely because they share your political beliefs.
That may have worked for your other Republican leaders, but it is not working with Trump.
The excuses and attempts to make Trump into a God-ordained spiritual and political leader are ruining the reputation of American Christianity.
